Social Media Shaman – Facebook vs. Twitter

I read a couple of interesting articles today.  They were both about which is better for business, Facebook or Twitter?  Here is the article saying Twitter is better.  Here is the article saying Facebook is better.  I thought I would weigh in with my two cents worth.

I actually agree with many points of these two articles.  Twitter is designed to disseminate information quickly and broadly.  If you have a message that you want to get out to a lot of people quickly, it would be hard to find a better, cheaper vehicle than Twitter.  The issue though, is that that is what 90% of businesses are using it for.  You have to fight through a lot of static.  As long as you are listening (not just posting), and giving people helpful, useful information it is still a highly effective medium.

Facebook is much better for creating a relationship.  People care much more about who their friends are on Facebook than they do on Twitter.  I am in the camp that making the “Like” button universal will help businesses gain more followers more quickly.  But, it is still a slow sell process at Facebook.  If you are just pumping out message, message, message you will quickly be un-liked.  Those that do follow you are more likely to be true fans and cheerleaders for your brand.  It is also important to note that Facebook has Twitter beat by size hands down.  It is hard to say you shouldn’t be in the media channel that has 500 million people involved.

In the end, I think you should be in both.  Use Twitter to gain followers quickly and disseminate your brand, message and products/services in front of a lot of eyeballs.  Then push those eyeballs to Facebook where you can build a lasting relationship and customers who both know you and cheer for you.

If I had to choose just one, I would again go with the political answer.  If you want to just get in front of as many people as possible, go to Twitter.  If you want to build long term relationships, it has to be Facebook.
