I don’t know if you have heard the new Snow Patrol song “Just Say Yes” but it is fantastic advice. We all get offers and opportunities throughout our life, and my recommendation would be that if you can, just say yes. The amount of amazing things that I have gotten to do just because I have said yes to people have been some of the best parts of my life.
Just this morning I got the chance to talk about social media and how a Human Resources professional can use social media tools to help them in their work. I don’t know much about human resources. But I do know a lot about social media. So when a colleague asked me to talk in front of her group, I didn’t even think, I just said yes.
This required that I do a lot of research to actually give the presentation, but that just means that I learn even more about my field and its wider applications. So not only did I learn more, but I also got to do one of my favorite things: public speaking.
None of that would have happened if I had not said yes two years ago when I was asked to take a Dale Carnegie class on human relations and public speaking. This taught me that I loved public speaking, and since then I have had the chance to say yes to many different public speaking engagements.
Saying yes can lead to great things. If you accept that there are opportunities out there for you and say yes to them when they rear their heads, you can end up having a lot of fun with your life.
