I have started surveying a new market for a business I want to go into recently. One thing that I notice is being said over and over again is, “I know it’s a cliche to say the grass is greener, but it sure seems to be.” or a variant of that.
Today I thought I would talk about this saying.
The saying goes The Grass is Always Greener. What it means, to me, is that when you look at someone else’s life you can always pick out something about it that is better than yours. Maybe that person has a happy marriage. Maybe they have a nicer car than yours. Maybe they just seem happier than you do.
What I feel is being overlooked though (and what I believe the saying is referring to) is that it is just that one thing. Maybe they do have a great relationship while you sit here single. But they might also hate their job, and have horrible relationships with other people in their lives. Maybe their car is amazing, and you wish you could purchase something even close to how cool it is. What you don’t see, however, is the ocean of debt they are barely treading water in to keep that car.
I guess, this all really comes back to positive thinking. You could absolutely look around you and pick out all of the things that you don’t have. You could focus on how everyone is better than you. I advocate that you focus on what you have. Maybe you have the great relationship. Mayhaps (always wanted to use that word!!!) you are at a job that you love while all of your friends are complaining about theirs. If you focus on what you are thankful for, you will be of a much better attitude than if you focus on what others have that you do not.
Now, I am absolutely not saying don’t dream, don’t plan or don’t try to get those things you want. Everything I have written up to this point would contradict that thought. You should be willing to work hard to get what you want. You should be willing to go the extra mile to get the life you dream of. I am simply saying stay positive. All of those negative thoughts just waste your time. Don’t let them.
